Thanks as well to Janis Eden and Susan MacPherson for all the work they did to provide food for the evening. WE ARE OPEN!
We can say it now. Ladies and gentlemen – throw those rocks!!!.
Many thanks to Mike Shields (our ice maker) for literally living at the club (in his RV) for the past week just so we could open on time. The ice is in great shape but the interior and parking lot still have some work to be done.
The lounge and vestibule entrance still requires work this week. This includes finishing off the bar area, doing some floor and tile work, laying carpet and painting the new entrance to the change areas. This should all be completed by next weekend.
Construction and resurfacing of the main parking lot (south entrance) begins in earnest tomorrow and should be completed in about 2 weeks. We are hoping to have it substantially finished for the opening ceremony on the 23rd but this is somewhat dependent on good weather. In the meantime we ask you to be patient as we struggle with parking issues (please read "parking challenges" note below). We will only be able to accommodate a little more than one draw of curlers in the north lot. This will pose a problem for 9 pm games in particular. We also will have football players trying to use the fields some evenings.
It is very likely that about 25-35 cars will have to park on Muriel Street and perhaps even spread up to the Legion’s lot. Please help by arriving 10-15 minutes early and give yourself more time. We would ask that due to safety issues we all look out for each other and consider leaving the club in groups so as to ensure no one has to walk alone late at night.
We appreciate your understanding over the next few weeks as we get the kinks out.
Let the games begin!

Curling Rocks Maintenance
Approximately 10 years ago our rocks were reconditioned by insertion of new running surfaces. Over time some inconsistencies have developed re the “speed” and the “amount of curl”. This is normal in a club as busy as York.
This summer Canada Curling Stone Company has performed follow-up maintenance on our rocks. You will note that the rocks will curl quite aggressively for the next month or so. Over time the amount of curl will decrease.
In the meantime please ensure that you throw your rocks with a very positive handle. “Lazy” handles will result in lost turns and missed shots.

Ice News
To ensure a more consistent aging of the running surface and reduce frost exposure to outside sheet rocks, all rocks from sheet 1 are now on sheet 3 and sheet 3 rocks are on sheet 1. Similarly sheet 2 and 4 rocks have been switched. All rocks have remained in the same numbered position and in addition all handles have also been rotated by a ¼ rotation (clockwise) from their previous position.

Seniors Curling Update
The Senior Division of York Curling Club has 140 registered curlers and everything seems to be running smoothly. We have 7 draws a week of 6 - end games. (3 on Monday, 1 on Tuesday, and 3 on Wednesday). Each curler usually curls in two draws a week.
On Wednesday, Nov. 28th. we have the first of our "Friendly Home and away 'Spiels".
We will be sending 6 teams to Richmond Hill for 2 games and lunch, and Richmond Hill will pay a return visit next March. We also hold 'spiels with Beaverton, Uxbridge and Sutton, using the same format only with 4 teams each time. We try to get every Senior curler involved in at least one spiel.
There is a Christmas party to be planned for Dec. 19th. which will take the format of a mixed up curling bonspiel. This always proves to be fun.
For any information regarding the Senior Curling contact Shirley Charles or Anne Perrin.

Ice News ...
First, I would like to thank Richard and the numerous volunteers for their effort and assistance with getting the ice ready for our 2007/08 season. Although, we have been experiencing wonderful warm and sunny fall weather it has provided Richard and his team with numerous challenges. Needless to say, the ice looks great. In addition several pieces of equipment required servicing this year and as a result there is a need to close two sheets during the October 4th afternoon (4-6pm) session of "Green Ice". Sorry, for any inconvenience.
Also, late last year, there were several observations from members around the performance of the number '7' Red Rock on Sheet 1. It appeared, to be reacting differently (over curling). Thus, to ensure skip rocks on Sheet 1 are more consistent, the number '2' and '7' rocks were flipped.
Lastly, the club has invested in a new measurer. Thus, we now have one located at each end of the ice shed.
