Welcome to York Curling Club's
Registration Information Page
for the 2011 / 2012 Curling Season
This page is intended to be the source for all information that you need to learn about York Curling Club, about the various leagues operated by YCC, its member registration process, etc. We trust that it proves helpful, and ask that any comments/suggestions you might have regarding this site or YCC’s registration process be directed to our membership team [Membership@YorkCurlingClub.ca].
About YCC
Located in Newmarket (220 Muriel Street), the York Curling Club was established 1956. Throughout its first 50+ years of operation, YCC was a 4-sheet facility. During 2010, YCC underwent significant renovation – expanding at that time to 6 sheets.
Additional information regarding activities at the club, YCC’s history and its Board/Executive is available from the linked documents.
If you require additional information about the club or wish to visit our facility, please feel free to contact our club manager, JoAnn Inouye [Manager@YorkCurlingClub.ca or 905-898-2155].
Registration for the 2011-2012 Season is Now Open
YCC’s registration process for the upcoming 2011-2012 season was launched by a letter from club president Kent Milford (click this link to read the letter) to past members and other interested parties.
As outlined in the President’s letter, several changes are being made to the registration process for the upcoming season. Some notables regarding the 2011-2012 registration process are as follows:
Generally speaking, applications will be processed on a first-come-first served basis. Quite simply, this means that those who apply early have a better chance of getting registered into their preferred leagues than do those who apply later. We draw this to your attention since some leagues consistently fill up early.
An exception to the first-come-first-served policy is that applications received from new members won’t be processed until August 1st. This exception doesn’t alter the principle that those who apply early have a better chance of getting registered into their preferred leagues than do those who apply later – but the exception does give a temporary advantage to returning members (and this advantage disappears on August 1 for those who haven’t applied by that time).
YCC’s fee schedule has been modified in a few respects.
Firstly, our experience is that club members have been challenged sometimes in getting the HST calculated correctly. So to make things easier, the published rates for YCC’s 2011-2012 season are all inclusive of 13% HST. At first glance, this change causes our fee rates to appear significantly higher than in past – but in practice, this one change doesn’t alter the overall amount that an applicant must pay.
While the inclusion of HST in our published rates accounts for the vast majority of increase in these rates, inclusion of HST is not the only fee rate change made by our Board – for instance, some of the league rates have also been adjusted. Concerning these other changes to our fee schedule, the Board reviewed the level of fees charged over the last couple of seasons and for the upcoming season, and found on an overall basis that YCC’s fee rates will have increased by less than 2% annually.
Lastly on fees, the Board has established a $30 late application fee. Past experience has seen many applications arrive from returning members after the registration period had formally closed, and this has proven very disruptive to organizing our leagues (it’s hard to organize a league without knowing how many participants there are). Imposition of a late fee is not intended as a “money maker” – rather, it is intended simply to encourage a more-timely submission of membership applications and thereby facilitate our league organization processes. The club reserves the right not to accept applications that are received after September 20 – and where they are accepted, such applications will generally be subject to this late fee.
While on the subject of late applications, it warrants mention that for team entry leagues a team won’t be considered as entered until at least 3 of its 4 players have been identified, registered and paid the related league fee. If, come September 21, 2011, a team has failed to meet this test, then the club can fill the vacant position(s) by assigning players to the team; alternatively, the club can choose to award the team slot in its entirely to another group of players seeking entry into the league.
The application form has been expanded, as it is now a 2-page document and the 2nd page requires the applicant’s signature. In signing the form, the applicant agrees to abide by club rules. In signing the form, the applicant also provides a release from liability and an indemnification to YCC. In effect, this means that risks arising from being a YCC member (for instance, getting hurt from a fall on the ice) are risks that the applicant assumes and for which he/she won’t make a claim against the club.
Leagues Operated by YCC
Information on the leagues that YCC intends to operate during the 2011/2012 season is available from the Leagues page or by downloading the League Information document. Returning members will see that our league schedule for 2011-2012 looks very much like last season’s schedule (but it is not identical).
YCC’s Registration Process and Related Forms
There are two ways that an individual can apply for membership in the York Curling Club, namely:
by completing and mailing the application form together with a cheque (last year, the vast majority of members registered this way)
or
by attending one of the in-club registration events.
Mail-in Application
You can download the appropriate membership application form by clicking on the following link:
Because the form is quite sizeable, it can take several seconds for it to open on your computer – please be patient.
Once the form has opened, you can enter you information directly into the document on your computer. While the form is such that you won’t be able to save it on your computer, you can print the form. The preferred approach is to first enter your information into the form, select your league(s), etc., and then, once you have entered all required information, print the form. As you’ll see, the form will calculate the fee amount based on the leagues chosen. The alternative approach is to print the form before completing it and simply handwrite your information into the printed document (in which case you will have to do some arithmetic too). Regardless of the approach you use, please read the completed form and, if agreeable, sign it (on page 2).
York Curling Club relies heavily on the efforts of volunteers – in many respects, volunteers are the backbone of YCC. The time and effort of our volunteers reduces the costs needed to maintain the club. This is your club…we need each of you to help in some small way. Volunteer opportunities can occur in many ways – bonspiels, kitchen, committee members, school lessons, ice assistance, maintenance – the list goes on and on. Please be generous in offering your services by downloading and completing the Volunteer Commitment Form which includes a list of ways in which you might help. We recognize the efforts of all who have given, and the volunteer form is merely a formal way of saying, “yes, I can help!” - it also assists the matching of the club's needs to the volunteer's interests / capabilities, thus making it a more rewarding experience for all.
Your mail-in package should include the following:
completed application form, including signature on page 2
completed volunteer commitment form
a current-date cheque payable to York Curling Club
Mail the package to: Gerry Schnurr, 42 Corner Ridge Road, Aurora, Ontario L4G 6L2
Attend one of the In-Club Registration Events
The Club will be open on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 for the submission of registration applications:
firstly, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm, and,
then later that same day from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
Registration documents will be available at the club, you can have your questions addressed on the spot, and the club bar will be open. These events are also great opportunities to renew friendships and make new ones.
Curlers Absent During Registration Process
By written authorization, curlers who are absent may appoint a proxy to register and pay fees on their behalf. Applicants who do so must subsequently complete a signed application form to finalize their registration process.
Checking Your Registration Status
Historically, the club’s membership team has received many queries from individuals asking about whether their application has been received and processed. For the 2011-2012 registration cycle, we will publish updates to the registration list on a regular basis to allow applicants to confirm that their registration form has been processed. Check the home page of the website for the updated list each week.
Upcoming YCC Events
We realize that the summer sun does not immediately make one think of throwing rocks and hitting the broom. However, we also know that the next curling season will be upon us sooner than most think! With that as context, the following links outline a few of YCC’s “early season” events that are guaranteed to be enjoyable and might of interest you.
